Washington County: A Geocaching Destination

Washington County’s Birthplace of Texas GeoTour has welcomed many visitors this summer and continues to mark us as a favorite destination for geocaching. Since the December 2013 launch, the GeoTour has brought more than 200 visitors to the area from Texas, Georgia, Colorado, Puerto Rico, Sweden and The Netherlands!

We love welcoming geocachers to Washington County... you might come here on a mission to geocache, but you'll find a lot of fun along the way! History, ice cream, beautiful country drives, and charming downtowns, many geocachers have commented about seeing something they didn’t know existed and express plans to return to spend more time.

And now is the time to return! We will be hosting three events over Labor Day weekend. All geocachers, visitors and locals, as well as those interested in learning more about this fun activity are invited to join us at each event!

Fri, Aug 29, 7:30pm – “Flash Mob” type of event in Downtown Brenham. This is a 15-minute event where cachers gather at one spot to greet each other, sign the log, maybe take a picture, then disperse to play, eat, or continue caching. GC59E2E

Sat, Aug 30, 6-8pm – Meet & Greet Picnic. This is a come and go event where you will have the opportunity to sit and chat with fellow geocachers, share stories, show off your prized geocoins, etc. Sausage wraps and chips will be provided. Bring your own drinks and any other food you desire to eat or share (optional). GC59GR7

Sun, Aug 31, 7:30am – “Cache In, Trash Out” event. CITOs are a way for geocachers to give back to the community by helping pick up trash in a specific area. Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t geocache. Everything you need will be provided, including water. Please wear appropriate clothing. GC59E7E

Those completing the Birthplace of Texas GeoTour during or before the weekend are encouraged to bring their Passports to one of the above events to claim your geocoins. We've distributed 125 of the 250 coins we ordered, so there's still plenty to hand out! :-)

Here's an idea... Make plans to stay with us over Labor Day weekend and come to one, or all, of our events! Not only will you have a fun weekend, you'll also get extra smilies and special souvenirs for your geocaching profile! We have plenty of lodging - hotels/motels, B&Bs, resorts and camping. We'd love to have you join us, even if just for the day.

And local geocachers - we want to meet you!! Please consider joining us for at least one of our gatherings. Not only can you meet fellow cachers and hear about cool finds, but you can get hints and tips from veteran cachers or even cache owners of ones you can't seem to find.

Whether you're a new or veteran geocachers or just reading about geocaching for the first time, you are welcome in Washington County! Happy caching and we'll see you soon! :-)
