5 on FRIDAY + Antiques...

Round Top has become well known for antiques, art and music - maybe antiques more than anything else. Four times a year Hwy 237 comes alive, this weekend being one of those times for the 2014 Winter Show.

Round Top has been host to one of the nation's largest antique events since 1967 with the large shows being in October and April. The Original Round Top Antiques Fair is still the first full weekend in April and October. Because of its success, many other shows open prior to it and now include the towns in a 10-mile radius of Round Top.

The locations for the shows are as varied as the dealers exhibiting. Some are in a dance hall, some under football field-size tents, and still others fill fields, but all have treasures. Even the most dedicated shopper can not possibly see everything in one day, as there is so much to see and more arriving daily. Most of the shows are north and south of Round Top along Highway 237. Some shows are more controlled than others with exact opening and closing times. Others open when the sun rises and close when the sun sets.

Some call this a "flea market" but it is not what one thinks of in the traditional sense of a flea market. There are only antiques and antique related items, and yes, some are new, but the vast majority are not. The exhibitors come from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe with items as varied as old tools, architectural pieces, furniture, collectibles, artwork, fine china, jewelry and silver.

If you're looking for something else to do this weekend, here are some suggestions...
